One idea for a Primary activity day is to have a Christmas craft fair. This can be expanded to include a service project as well. This day can be fairly inexpensive, but a lot of fun for the children. It is generally best to plan this activity for sometime in November, because December is so busy for everyone. Also if you are completing care packages for the missionaries from your ward, you will want to have to mail the packages to the missionaries.
You should open the activity with a spiritual reminder of why we celebrate Christmas. Here is an excellent Sharing Time activity on Christmas. In order to keep the activity running smoothly, you will want to set up several stations for the children to visit. You can set these up in different rooms or in the cultural hall. Here are five suggestions for stations.
1) An ornament station. You can have the children make some type of ornament. I have seen children glue glitter to glass balls or putting confetti in clear balls. You can also make ornaments out of Christmas cards.
2) Even if you are not doing a care package, it would be nice to have a letter writing station for the children to write Christmas greetings to the missionaries from your ward. The younger children can draw a picture to send as well. You may want to have the older children write their testimonies in Books of Mormon to send as well.
3) At least one station should deal with the true meaning of Christmas. I really like the idea of having the children make a manger to take home and add straw and yarn to for the baby Jesus. In order to add a piece each day, they must serve someone. You can find a pattern and more explanation here.
4) You can have the children make wrapping paper to take home to use. You can also have them wrap their ornaments to give as gifts. This is an easy craft to set up. You will just need butcher paper, Christmas stamps or sponges, ink or paint, and markers.
5) The final station could be a Christmas cookie station, where the children frost and decorate their own cookies for refreshment. You can have the children save the cookies for the end so everyone has one at the same time.
