Primary Time: Dealing with the Isolation of Teaching Primary

Serving in the Primary is a great calling. It is a chance to interact with the children and an opportunity to share your testimony each week. The one downside to serving in the Primary is that it can be isolating socially. You do not have the same opportunity to interact with members during church on Sunday. If you are new to the ward, this can make it difficult to get to know other members of your ward. Here are a few tips to help you overcome this.

1) One great way to get to know other ward members is to attend the ward activities. This are designed to give you a chance to socialize and get to know other people in the ward. This will allow you to meet people outside of Primary.

2) Attend Home, Family and Personal Enrichment or other Quorum activities that might be held. These activities will give you the chance to get to know other people. They often allow you to serve others or to learn a new skill as well.

3) Another great way to get to know other members in the ward is to serve as a home or visiting teacher. Friendships are often formed from visiting others. Your companion can introduce you to other ward members and help you feel welcome as well.

4) Take the time to meet the parents of the children in your Primary class. The parents like to know more about the teachers, and it is an easy way to introduce yourself to someone. You may also want to get to know the other teachers in Primary.

5) Read the ward bulletin and other announcements so that you can stay on top of the activities that are offered in your ward. If you do not have a bulletin or an announcement sheet, you may want to request that the Relief Society provide one for the sisters that are not attending Relief Society.
