Primary Time: Five Ideas for Activity Days

Since school is about to begin again, Activity Days may be starting up for some wards again. It is up to each ward to decide if they will continue to have Activity Days and Cub Scouts over the summer. Now is a great time to sit down and plan out most of your activities for the remainder of the year. Here are five possible activities you could include, which meet goals for the Faith in God Award.

1) One activity is to write a thank you letter for someone you care about. You could plan to do this for Grandparents Day in early September. You may want to have the girls make their own cards using card stock and scrapbooking supplies.

2) One goal is to complete a pedigree chart. If you have a local family history library available you may want to set up a time that the girls can visit there. This will give them a chance to see the computer programs available, and to tell their parents about the resources available. You may have a quest speaker come in and explain the proper way to fill out a pedigree chart and a family group sheet. You may also want someone to share interesting stories about their ancestors.

3) One goal is to cook a nutritional meal. You may want to plan, as a class, to cook a meal for a new mother or other family who is need. This would be a great service opportunity for the girls, as well as giving them experience in the kitchen. This activity would need to take place in a member’s home, since we are not supposed to cook in the kitchens at church.

4) One activity is to visit a cultural event or art exhibit. There are often free nights that you can go to different museums. You may also want to look at your high school’s calendar and attend a play, a choral or a band concert to fulfill this requirement. You can teach the girls about how to behave appropriately and provide refreshments afterwards.

5) Since school is starting you might want to have a lesson on good study habits. You can talk about memorization tricks, organizational tricks, and other things that will make school more fun. This will fulfill a goal as well. You could theme it as a “Back to School” night and make a book cover for each of the girls.
