Primary Time: Five Tips for Memorizing “The Articles of Faith”

One of the requirements to achieve the “Faith in God” award is to memorize “The Articles of Faith.” This can be daunting if you sit down to accomplish it in a week or two, but if you work on it over a period of time it can become a much easier process. It is also important that your children understand the meaning of the Article of Faith as well. Here are five easy tips to help your child memorize the Articles of Faith.

1) Memorize the Articles of Faith together as a family. You can choose one each month and recite the one you are memorizing together each day at dinner.

2) You may want to post a chart with all of the words on it, and then slowly cover up one or two words a day until you and your children can recite by yourselves.

3) You can have a family home evening lesson based on the Article of Faith that you are memorizing. This will help your children to understand the words, which they are saying. This will also help to teach the basic principles of the gospel to your children.

4) In the “Children’s Songbook” you can find each of the Articles of Faith put to music. Listening to the songs, and learning them can help you memorize them. If you or your child is musical this might be a big help. I personally feel that some of the songs work better then others with the music.

5) Be sure to review the ones that you have already memorized on a regular basis. This will help to fix the ones you have already memorized in your mind. At family home evening each week you could have each family member draw a number out of a hat and then recite the corresponding Article of Faith.

If this tradition works well you can continue memorizing scriptures as a family. You could start by memorizing the scriptures suggested in “Preach My Gospel,” and Seminary scriptures. Of course you will have different expectations for your youngest children, but you will be surprised at how much they do retain.
