Easter is just around the corner, and it is one of the most important holidays that we celebrate. Teaching our children about Eater is important. It is time to learn about the Atonement, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. Unfortunately commercialism often gets in the way of celebrating the true meaning of Easter.
You can bring your children’s focus on Easter back to the real meaning of the holiday through several different means. The first and easiest thing to do is to separate the Easter Bunny and other commercial type celebrations from the celebration that you have on Sunday. This allows your family to focus more fully on the true meaning of Easter.
You can also have your family home evening lessons focus on Christ and his ministry in the month leading up to Easter. The Monday before Easter you may choose to have the lesson focus on the Last Supper, Atonement and Crucifixion, so that your children can be prepared to realize the importance of the holiday that they are celebrating. You may want to save the story of the Resurrection until Easter, and review it as a family on Sunday.
Another way you can bring the focus to Christ is to read about Christ’s last days on Earth during family scripture study in the week leading up to Easter. Reviewing these stories and reading the accounts of the Apostle’s can bring the story to life. You may also consider watching Lamb of God as part of the time you spend together learning about the Savior with your family.
Finally be sure that you talk to your children about why Easter is an important holiday and bear your testimony about the events that we celebrate. As you do this, your children will learn more about the gospel, and the gift that Christ has given us so that we can repent and return to live with him.
