Primary Time: January 2008 Sharing Time Theme

The Sharing Time theme for January is “I am a child of God and He has a plan for me.” The scripture reference is from the second paragraph of the Proclamation to the Family. It reads: “All human beings-being male and female-are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each as a divine nature and destiny.” The song for the month is “I Am a Child of God.”

The theme is broken down into four weekly principles. The first principle teaches that we each lived with Heavenly Father in the premortal world, and that we are each created in His image. The second principle teaches that we each accepted Heavenly Father’s plan for us, and that we each have a divine destiny. The third principle teaches that we each have agency and we each chose to follow Heavenly Father’s plan. The fourth principle teaches about the Creation and Adam and Eve.

As a family you can easily incorporate these principles into your family home evening lessons. You can have a lesson on the Plan of Salvation and one on agency. You may also want to use some of the resources from the Sharing Time page in this month’s Friend. There is a great illustration available for the Plan of Salvation. You can print it out on cardstock and use it on a flannel board. Additionally you can use the coloring page as part of your lesson.

You may want to talk about agency and how it relates to goal setting as well. This really is a great focus for your family home evenings. You can also focus on learning all four verses of “I Am a Child of God” during your music time each week. The Plan of Salvation is one of the most important things you can teach your children. When you teach it, it is important to remember to teach about choices, consequences and repentance as well.
