If you have a child who turned three this last year, it is nearly time for him to move up to Primary. This is an exciting transition. It is handled in many different ways by the different wards. Some may begin pulling children into a class the last half of nursery class beginning in November or December. This will give the children a chance to know their new teachers. Others may keep the children in the new class for a few months, before having them join in Sharing Time and opening exercises. Here are five things you can do to help your child with the transition.
1) Make sure that your child knows who her new teacher will be. This can ease a lot of fears. As soon as you know you may want to have your child introduce herself to her new teacher on Sunday. A familiar face will help to ease the transition.
2) You should take time the time to talk to your child about how fun Primary will be. Many children miss the free time and the toys that go along with Nursery. It can be difficult to sit still. You need to stress the aspects of Primary that your child will enjoy the most.
3) It is important to talk about the need to be reverent during class time and Sharing Time. Most teachers will understand that the children need to time to move and interact, but there are times when they need to sit quietly. You may want to talk about the importance of being quiet during prayers and talks with your child.
4) Most children love growing up and doing the things the older children are doing. You can stress how big he is by going into Primary. If you keep this positive he will really enjoy the experience.
5) Be flexible and allow some time for adjustment. It is not easy for a three-year-old to make the transition to sitting still for so much longer. If you are understanding and supportive then it will be easier for your child as well.
