Primary Time: May 2008 Sharing Time Theme

This month the theme for sharing time is “Heavenly Father planned for me to come to my family. I can strengthen my family now.” The scripture is from The Proclamation to the Family, it reads: “The family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.” The song for this month is “Home.” You may want to work with your children to learn this song.

The theme is divided into four principles that are taught in each of the weeks. The first principle focuses on learning about families in the scriptures, to help strengthen families now. The second principle talks about the importance of each role in the family. The third principle focuses on strengthening the family with regular family scripture study, family prayer, and family home evening. The final principle focuses on how the priesthood strengthens families.

This is a great theme to teach to your children. You may want to stress how each of your children contributes to the family. You can point out the good qualities that they have and how they treat each other. It is also a time to talk about contributing to the work of the home and family. If you are having trouble with family home evening or family prayer and scripture study, challenge your children to commit to it. This may make a difference in their attitudes and behavior.

The Friend has an activity for your children to complete that focuses on strengthening the family. There is also a coloring page that your children can complete while discussing the family. You can talk to your children throughout the month about the blessing and strength that comes from family. You may want to take the opportunity to reach out to extended family. Take the time this month to tell each child individually how much he or she means to you.
