Primary Time: Personal Scripture Study

If you have older Primary children, it is a great time to have them establish the habit of daily scripture reading. I started the year that I turned eight, because my stake president had challenged all the youth (eight years and older) to read the book of Mormon everyday. I honestly would not have started the habit if I had not been asked to at that time. I think it would have been more difficult to establish the habit if I had been challenged as an older teenager. You can help your children start the habit, and hopefully it will stay them throughout their life.

You could have a family home evening about the importance of personal scripture study. You can begin reading the Book of Mormon together with your beginning readers. If you do this on a daily basis, it will build the foundation of a wonderful habit.

Once your child is comfortable reading by himself, you should make sure that your child has his own set of scriptures. This is very important, because it will demonstrate to your children the value of the scriptures. It will also give them an opportunity to study and mark the scriptures.

You can teach your children about marking important scriptures during family scripture study. You can also use this time to teach your children how to apply the teachings of the scriptures to their daily lives. This can be done with a discussion of what you read that day.

Another way you can encourage personal scripture study is to challenge your children to set it as a personal goal. You can make a chart where your children can mark off each day that they read. At the end of three months or so, you can offer a reward for ninety-percent reading. Or you can have them read to a certain goal, and after they achieve it have them set another goal.

Once the habit is established it will be easier for your child to make personal daily scripture study a part of her daily life. This will be a blessing to her as grows older and faces the many challenges set before her. What have you done to encourage personal scripture study in your family?
