The sharing time theme for September is “My faith in Jesus Christ grows when I serve others.” The scripture is Mosiah 2:17: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” Since the Sacrament Program is coming up there is not a specific song that the children will learn this month. You should take the time to review all of the songs with your children.
The theme is broken down into four separate points. The children will learn that Jesus taught that we should serve others. They will learn that one place to serve is in their family. They will learn that being kind and sharing is a form of service. They will also learn that they can demonstrate their love for Christ through service.
The Friend has suggestions on ways to teach this in Primary and at home as well. You can find a mobile that your children can make with a picture of Jesus and different types of service. There is also a coloring picture for your children to complete. The picture illustrates the story of the Good Samaritan. If you do a search you can also find flannel board figures to teach this story as part of a family home evening lesson.
You may want to challenge your older children to memorize the scripture. You can also carry this over into your family throughout the month. You can complete a service project as a family during the month. Since it is nearly fall, it is a great time to rake leaves for older couples in the ward. You can also have secret service buddies in the family. This will help your children to really grasp the blessings that service can bring into their lives.
Additionally you may want to share stories about times when service has blessed your life. You should share stories about times when you offered service and times when you received service. You may decide to complete an act of service as a family at least twice a week, every week this month. The acts do not need to be big, but it might be fun to leave a plate of cookies for different families in the ward.
