This month the theme for Sharing Time is “The Scriptures Show Us the Way.” In this month’s “The Friend” you can find flannel board figures to tell the story of Daniel and the lion’s den, the 2,000 stripling warriors, the story of Ruth and Nephi getting the brass plates. It would be great to incorporate these stories into your family scripture time or your family home evening lessons.
If you do not already read the scriptures as a family, now would be a great time to start. If you have younger children you can use the scripture readers, which are illustrated stories from the scriptures. I know families with young children who use flannel board figures to tell the scripture stories to their children. If you have children who are old enough to read by themselves, you should encourage them to begin studying the scriptures on their own. One great way to do this is to buy them their own set of scriptures.
Another fun idea for family home evening is to ask each family member come prepared to share their favorite scripture or scripture story with the family. You can then discuss what the scripture means or teaches and how it has affected your life. The scriptures are a great source of knowledge and comfort. The sooner you can help your children feel comfortable reading the scriptures, the better off they will be.
This month the song is “Search, Ponder and Pray” on p 109 in “The Children’s Songbook.” This is a great song and it should be fairly easy to teach your children. You can include it in the singing part of your family home evenings, and practice whenever your children want to sing.
The theme this month is wonderful. It is a great chance to really teach your children the importance of studying the scriptures and learning the word of God. Take the opportunity to bear your testimony to your children of the importance of the scriptures.
