This month the sharing time theme is “I follow Jesus Christ when I make and keep my baptismal covenant.” The scripture that the theme focuses on is John 3:5. You may want to work with your children to memorize the scripture for this month.
The theme is broken into four parts. First the children are reminded that Jesus was baptized as well. Then the children learn more about the baptismal covenants. The children also learn about receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Finally the children learn that the Sacrament is an opportunity for them to renew their baptismal covenants.
Over the month you may want to talk about the promises you make when you are baptized. You may also want to share any special stories you may have regarding your baptism. You may want to make this wheel for your children to use to help them think about Christ during the Sacrament. You can also find a coloring picture about baptism in this month’s “Friend.” The sharing time section has a great lesson on remembering your covenants, complete with a game if you are looking for a quick family home evening lesson.
If you have older children in the house you may want to ask them to share their baptism stories with their younger siblings. It is especially important that your children understand the covenants that they are making. A great story that teaches this is Alma and when he baptizes in the Waters of Mormon. You may want to read this account as a family this month as well.
The song for this month is “I Want to Live the Gospel” (Children’s Songbook 148). You may want to spend time helping your children to learn this song. Family home evening is a wonderful time to work on this song together.
