Primary Time: The Importance of Chores

It is important that we teach our children to work. This may seem to be an obvious statement to many, but more and more children are not learning to apply themselves to jobs, and to work through the difficult problems. Working together as a family has a lot of positive benefits for the family and individual. It is extra time together, as well as a chance to talk together. Working hard is also a beneficial skill to have later in life.

It can be difficult to realize when your children are old enough to begin working on certain chores, or really helping around the house. When your children are young you can have everyone work on the same room of the house, and assign the littler ones to the easier things, and move up slowly. Although they may not dust as well as you would like, it is worth it to have them participating.

As your children grow older they should be able to take on more responsibility. It is important to set up tasks that they can complete successfully. When you present a new task or chore for your child, be there with them, and walk them through the steps. If you find a task is simply beyond their level you may want to assign something new and come back to it in a few years.

Family council meetings are a great way to assign chores and set expectations for your family. It is important to remember to reward and praise your child for their hard work. The reward can be as simple as a hug or a thank you. It will show your child that you do appreciated everything that they are doing to help out the family. It is a wonderful way to set a good example.
