In this corner… we have His Royal Highness, Charles, the Prince of Wales: A 58-year-old father of two who likes to grow his own organic vegetables. And, in this corner, it’s the MacDaddy of all fast-food giants, home of the clown bearing its name, and a host of other greasy (yet yummy) menu options–McDonald’s.
Ding! Ding! Let’s get ready to rumble!
Okay, perhaps, I am overdoing it a bit. After all, the alleged feud between the famous British royal and the fast food chain may not be as bad as many first thought.
So how did all of this get started? According to news reports, a few days ago Prince Charles suggested that McDonald’s should be banned. GASP! Yes, it’s true. The Prince made the comment during a visit to the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi, referencing the fact that the hamburger chain is often criticized over its high-fat menu choices.
“Have you got anywhere with McDonald’s? Have you tried getting it banned? That’s the key,” the prince said to a nutritionist at the center.
Sound like fighting words to you? McDonald’s thought so.
Today the company issued a statement that said it was disappointed by Prince Charles’ comment and that the heir to the British throne was “unfamiliar with its recent efforts to introduce healthier fare.” The statement went on to say: “The comment made by the Prince of Wales appears to be an off-the-cuff remark that, in our opinion, does not reflect either our menu or where we are at as a business.”
McDonald’s executives took another jab at Charles by saying he was clearly unaware of some of the moves the restaurant had made to improve menu options … “including the introduction of fruit, carrot sticks, salads and organic milk.”
It didn’t take long for a spokesman for Prince Charles to issue a response. This afternoon a letter was sent to McDonald’s executives, which read in part: “The Prince was keen to emphasize the need for children to enjoy the widest variety of food and not to eat any particular sort of food to excess.”
Frankly, I can’t say that I’m surprised by the current exchange between Prince Charles and the eatery responsible for the Big Mac. After all, Charles has long been an advocate of organic food. I mean, come on, the man not only runs his own organic farm, he recently published a cookbook in which he promised to rebel against what he called the “soulless, mass-produced food that had come to dominate the modern diet.”
So much for Charles the “Burger King.”
