Have you ever noticed how many people will tell you intimate details about their love lives, but not about their bank accounts? There is a significant stigma about discussing money in your relationships. Is this good or not?
In our culture, money often equates to power and prestige. People view discussions about money as bragging or whining – depending on the situation. Therefore, very few people broach the subject, even with close friends or family. While for many friendships, this is not a problem. In other relationships though, not discussing money can create a serious problem.
The best example of this is a bride and groom, who have shared all their intimate secrets but never once discussed their views on money. Unfortunately this happens often in dating relationships for couples of all ages. Money is a private matter and often a taboo subject. Of course, when a couple becomes married… this normally private matter becomes very public. If a fiancée doesn’t discuss his views on money with his girlfriend before the wedding, there is certain to be rocky roads ahead.
In addition, when families don’t discuss their finances this can hurt the children. If kids are not exposed to how money works, they won’t learn from a good role model. Unfortunately, many young adults venture out on their own with no understanding of exactly how a credit card works or how to balance a checkbook. If parents aren’t comfortable discussing money with their kids, how can they learn?
As a culture, it is okay to keep some things private – even your finances. But, don’t let this need for security keep you from having important money conversations with intimate partners and family. Like everything in your life, you need to have people you can trust. Open up about your money ways and woes to pave the way for better finances and relationships for all.
