We know Heath Ledger died (an all too early death), but federal agents say they still don’t know how the actor obtained the powerful painkillers Oxycontin and Vicodin that contributed to his passing.
According to new reports released by federal drug agents, no bottles for those drugs were found in Ledger’s apartment. However, the report does say that bottles were located in various parts of the actor’s home for other prescriptions such as sleeping pills and anti-anxiety drugs, which medical examiners found in his system at the time of his death.
Drug Enforcement Administration agents reveal that they recently interviewed two doctors – one in Houston and one in Los Angeles – who met with Ledger and prescribed drugs other than the painkillers. However, the federal agents say they are still trying to figure out who supplied the “Brokeback Mountain” star with the Oxycontin and Vicodin. According to sources close to the investigation, Ledger did not appear to have a medical condition that would have required those two drugs.
Federal agents say they are currently searching databases and Ledger’s credit card records to find out if someone gave the drugs to him or he bought it himself or he got it online. In addition, DEA agents say they will continue to track down physicians who may have prescribed the drugs.
Sources close to the investigation say once all the doctors have been interviewed, agents then move on to interviewing other people who could have given Ledger the drugs, which medical examiners determined contributed to his death.
The DEA launched the investigation shortly after the cause of Ledger’s death was revealed. And despite what some publications have been reporting regarding the relatively small amounts of Oxycontin and Vicodin that were found in Ledge’s system, medical experts are quick to point out that the combination of the drugs—–not the quantities—is what can kill a person.
Federal officials say their investigation could take another month.
