Problem Areas

What’s your biggest problem area when it comes to keeping your home neat and tidy?

Every home has problem areas. Some have more than one, because not only do they have common problem areas but they also have those unique to their home or family.

Common

Inside the front door is one space that is an issue for many. Family members come in and kick off shoes, drop jackets and bags, or forget to wipe their feet. The back door area may also have similar troubles of its own.

Playrooms may be problematic for some families, because they can all too quickly become untidy. This is especially true if your kids have more toys than the local toy store. I often tease my kids as I enter, saying, “Goodness, what happened? Did Toys “R” Us explode in here?”

Bathrooms are challenging for large families because they are constantly in use. Towels pile up quickly and cleaning other messes (toothpaste, soap scum) seem to be a never ending battle.

Basements, garages, and sheds can also be tough, since it’s too easy to just stuff things in these areas to get them out of the way then close the door and walk away. At my house it’s the utility room that tends to be the catch all.

Not as Common

Do you have a crawlspace? It’s another area that tends to become a catch all but it’s not as easy to organize. You can’t really get in there and move around, so you often find that you have to remove everything in order to straighten it out.

If you live in a mild climate and have a carport instead of a garage, you may find that this area becomes cluttered quickly. It begins as just stashing a few items to keep them out of the elements, but before long, there’s no room for the car.

Inside the house, niches can also become problematic because they don’t really have a specific purpose. Since they don’t, they tend to accumulate clutter.
