Problem Food for Pets

We’ve always been able to feed our dogs table scraps thinking we were being kind to them. Now we have discovered feeding pets too many table scraps can be no good. This Christmas we encountered a problem.

It seems that the off cuts of ham and pork that were fed to one little pooch ended up giving her a case of constipation. Since we had been encountered this once before with our other dog and it turned into a major drama, we were very quick to react. Of course it happened on a public holiday over the Christmas period when the vet was not open, so our son and daughter suggested we Google it.

That was a good move. That’s where we found out these table scraps can have a negative effect on dogs. We also tried a couple of suggestions they mentioned. One was olive oil. We did have to use a little chicken to get our dog to come at the olive oil. The other was cooked pumpkin. Interestingly our dog is not a big fan of vegetables normally but it was almost as though she seemed to know we were trying to help her. She ate the pumpkin. Of course it probably helped that she wasn’t getting anything else.

Anyway the remedy worked and the problem was resolved. It saved a vet bill and a lot of hassle. Thanks goodness for Google and family who suggested it. So now we ignore the pleading looks. I’d rather have her think us mean than have her sick again. That doesn’t mean she won’t still get some table scraps but it will only be things we know don’t affect her.

As we started to think about the problems we experienced once before some years back without other dog we realized that was at Christmas too. Obviously ham and pork are too rich for dogs to deal with.
