Product Review: Bellybar

I never turn down the chance to sample food (grocery store samples, anyone?), so when the makers of Bellybar asked me to review their product, I jumped at the chance. They sent me three Bellybar Boost snack bars in Baby Needs Chocolate, Berry Nutty Cravings and S’more to Love, and four DHA chews in Chocolate Cuddles and Citrus on Board.

The Baby Needs Chocolate Bellybar was really tasty. It definitely satisfied my candy bar craving. S’more to Love was also very good; I loved the tiny marshmallows on top. Berry Nutty Cravings has a sweet and smooth yogurt coating on the bottom that complimented the berry taste very well. If I had to pick a favorite, I would choose the Berry Nutty Cravings bar over the rest for its soft texture and sweet taste. The chocolate bars were very good, but they still tasted like you’d expect a health bar to taste. The berry flavor was rich and full, and it gave no indication that it was a health bar.

As for the DHA chews, the initial flavor was good, but it gave way to an odd aftertaste, which I contribute to the DHA (from algae) and other vitamins. They are packed with vitamins after all, so I am not surprised. There is only so much you can do to mask the flavor of vitamins, which is why all vitamin chews taste a little odd to me. I should note however, that I have a very sensitive palette, and when my husband tasted each flavor, he enjoyed them and did not detect any kind of aftertaste.

Overall, Bellybar offers a convenient and tasty way to get the nutrition you need for a healthy pregnancy. Let’s face it, it’s hard to eat right and often times cravings do not correlate with what is best for a pregnant woman’s diet. Snacks like those from Bellybar offer a sort of compromise in that you can eat a sweet snack and still get the nutrition you need.

Plus, you just can’t beat the packaging they used to send the samples. I’m a sucker for pretty packaging!
