Profile of a homeschooled adult: Theresa (Part 1)

Theresa is a homeschooled adult. Her mom educated her at home starting in the fourth grade. She was kind enough to answer a few questions for me, and I am sharing them here with you. If you ever wanted to know how homeschooled adults turn out, then you will want to read this blog entry and the ones that will follow.

Before homeschooling, Theresa and her older sister attended a private Christian school. Her parents pulled them out of the school and homeschooled them until “graduation”. At the time, no one else she knew was homeschooling.

Today, homeschoolers are usually issued some kind of diploma either through their parents or otherwise. When I asked what type of high school diploma Theresa had, she proudly replied “None!”

So how did Theresa get into college? She actually got into two different colleges quite easily. “I went to two different colleges.” Theresa replied. “The first one admitted me on the basis of my high school transcript and my ACT scores, no questions asked. Where did my high school transcript come from? Well, my father handed me the record book from my senior year and said, “You need a high school transcript. Look through the records, name the classes according to the material you covered, and give yourself some grades.” When I applied to transfer to the second college, I couldn’t find the transcript I had made, so I made up a new one. However, I was concerned that my college transcript might contain that information on it somewhere, and cause questions about why the two HS transcripts didn’t match. So I also wrote up a memo, which I titled “True Confessions about My High School Transcript”, wherein I outlined the whole, silly situation. I was admitted, again with no questions asked.”

So you see, homeschoolers do not have trouble getting into most colleges. Of course, there will be exceptions, but in the end, high scores are high scores, and a high school transcript is merely an account of the subjects you covered and how well you understood them.
