As we approach the 2008 Summer Olympics, now is a good time to talk about some Olympians who have been homeschooled. Being able to make education work around training through homeschooling is something many of these athletes such as Katie Hoff have in common with each other. According to her message board at www.katie-hoff.com, she felt that homeschool and public school has their advantages, you have to decide which one works for you. She also mentioned that she had friends who invited her to public school dances, which she took advantage of for the “socialization”.
Kate Hoff was the youngest member of the 2004 Olympic team and set the national age group record for 13-14 girls. Her mother was a basket ballplayer at Stanford University. In addition to swimming, she also did ballet, gymnastics and other sports as a child.
Katie Hoff is a strong contender for the 2008 Olympic Games and was also a 2004 Olympian where she placed seventh in the women’s 200 meter and 17the in the 400 medley. As she turns 19 this summer, she is reaching her prime and has qualified for all of the events are the U.S. trials. Her accomplishments are as follows:
- World Champion: 2005 200m, 400m IM and the 800m freestyle relay
- Silver 400m, and Bronze 200m: 2004 Short Course World Championships
- American Record: Sixth-fastest American woman ever in the 400 I.M.
