Joseph Lewis and Jack Green started Progressive Mutual Insurance Company in 1937. - They were the first to offer premium installments plans for their policyholders.
- In 1990, Progressive introduced the Immediate Response® claims service. A customer support and claims service, available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
- In 1992, Progressive was recognized as the largest auto insurance provider sold through independent insurance agents.
- Progressive introduced the 1-800-AUTO-PRO service in 1994. This service offered customers the opportunity to make one telephone call and receive several quotes one for Progressive Insurance and up to three other insurance companies quotes. Customers can purchase the Progressive Insurance policy on the phone directly and immediately. This service is still available by dialing 1-800-PROGRESSIVE (1-800-776-4737).
- The Immediate Response® Vehicle (IRV), introduced in 1994 was another industry first. The specially marked and outfitted van brings highly trained claims professionals to the customer’s location at work, home, and even the scene of an accident. - Progressive is the third largest auto insurance group in the United States. Between 1996 and 2005, Progressive grew an average of 17 percent per year.
