When it comes to promoting your business’ products and/or services, it is hard to beat a free offer or some sort of sample. You might not think you have the sort of business where you can give out something for free, but offering a freebie can be a surefire way to attract business.
While some businesses offer a free product or service (such a free consultation or buy one get one free), there are other ways you can use the appeal of offering something for free without giving away the farm. Consider giving away free information—creating a brochure or pamphlet that will provide customers and prospects with necessary information or insight on a subject related to your business. You can also give out referrals or consultations, as mentioned earlier. If you sell products, you might consider offering a free “consultation.” Recently, a friend of mine visited a furniture store and they offered to come to her home and do a free one-hour consultation. In fact, while she was getting free “design consultation,” the employee was getting the opportunity to do some very direct, very warm, personal selling.
Keep in mind that you don’t always have to give away something from YOUR business. You might be able to do some partnership marketing with a compatible business and give away a coupon or free product or service to someone else’s business and they can give away something free that is associated with your business. This way you are both reaching new prospective customers and sharing in the marketing.
Be creative and you will find ways to give away freebies that are not a burden or excessive expense to your business budget. Be sure to let people know that they are getting something at no charge too. Keep in mind that psychologically, people respond well to the word: “FREE.”
