Prophets

I am so grateful to have a prophet leading and guiding the church today. It is reassuring to me that the church is led by a prophet who follows the counsel given to him by Christ. Since I grew up as a member of the church, I didn’t realize this unique quality until I was in high school or college.

I remember the day in high school when I gained a testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith. I was in seminary and we were discussing some of the trials that Joseph faced while in Liberty Jail. As the class and the seminary teacher discussed his experiences, an overwhelming sense of peace came over me, and I knew that Joseph Smith had been called to restore the church to the earth today.

My favorite religion class at BYU was “The Living Prophets,” this classed focused on the teachings of the current prophet (President Hinckley) and the twelve apostles. In addition to reading their talks, we learned a little bit about each of their lives. I already had a testimony that each of these men had been called of God to stand as witnesses for Christ, but learning more about them strengthened my testimony.

It simply does not make sense to me that miracles would cease to happen or that we would no longer have a prophet of God to guide us. I am grateful for President Hinckley and the guidance that he gives us. I am also grateful for President Monson and President Faust as well as each of the Twelve Apostles. These men testify of Christ and urge each of us to do a little better in our lives.

I am grateful that we were able to learn at General Conference. We each have the chance to improve our lives as we follow the teachings. General Conference gives us a chance to learn from the prophet, just like the people in the scriptures did. I hope that you each will take the time to learn as well.
