Pros and Cons to Elliptical Machines

elliptical machine 2

I am a pretty big of my elliptical machine. I have a NordicTrack, found at most exercise stores and department stores that carry exercise equipment (such as Sears).

Although the elliptical machines are one of my favorite workout machines, like with any machine, there are pros and cons.

Pros

One pro to an elliptical, whether at the gym or at your home, is that it is an indoor workout. Indoor workouts are convenient when the weather outside is less than desirable. Indoor workouts can also be safer. Instead of running outside where you have to deal with terrain, the elliptical is free from uneven pavement, gravel, etc.

When you use an elliptical, you can set your own pace and track your progress. The electronic system makes it possible to see your distance, time, estimate of calories burned and often other features. Also, most ellipticals allow you to change the resistance.

One thing I like about me elliptical is it has zones on the electronic system. The zones are based on intensity like fat-burning zone or warm-up zone. The zone lights up based on your intensity. This makes it nice to ensure that you are doing a warm-up at the beginning of your workout before going into a higher, tougher zone.

Another pro to working out on an elliptical, is to keep from getting bored you can watch TV/movies or listen to music.

Cons

Elliptical machines can be pricey. If you belong to a gym, they are likely to have several machines for your use. However, if you are in the market to buying one for your home gym, they can be expensive. My elliptical was somewhere around $700-800 and has lasted several years. However, they can cost over $1,000 for the top of the line models and brands.

Ellipticals can have mechanical issues. In my experience, over time ellipticals can start to squeak and become unleveled. This has happened to both the machines I have owned. Although most elliptical usually have leveling feet where you can adjust the height, it is still a nuisance. Also, they squeak typically can be fixed with some WD-40, however my current machine still squeals, despite using the spray.

Overall elliptical machines are a great way to get a good indoor cardio workout. Although there are some disadvantages, in my opinion the advantages outweigh them.

Purchasing tip: when buying an elliptical, it is best to try out the brands and models in store instead of purchasing online without trying.
