Stress can come to all of us at times. Stress can cause all sorts of health issues, like heart disease, stomach ulcers, migraines, and, some believe, cancer. As much as possible try and keep stress to a minimum by trying to make your home a peaceful place. Make sure you both have a time to relax, enjoy a hobby and have couple time when you can talk things through.
Don’t let your expectations put too much stress on your spouse. In this day and age money issues are a point of concern, so watch the spending so it does not add more stress and pressure to the situation. Eliminate unnecessary expenditure.
What about alcohol? A recent study found that alcohol is linked to prostrate cancer. Prostrate cancer is as serious a problem for men as breast cancer is for women, yet it doesn’t receive near as much publicity. So while the occasional beer or wine might be fine, for your husband’s sake, don’t let it become too much of a habit.
Cancers are a curse of our modern world. Cancer Council spokeswoman, Carolyn Dews identified ‘poor diet and insufficient physical exercise’ as two of ‘the most important preventable causes of cancer.’ She also said, ‘It may surprise people to know a healthy diet and regular exercise can reduce a person’s risk of developing cancer by up to a third.’
Include fiber foods in the diet in order to try and combat colon cancer. As you and your husband get older make sure a bowel scan is part of a regular checkup. In Australia you can buy bowel scan kits from the chemist or pharmacy for a few dollars. These can be done simply at home. It’s a worthwhile yearly investment, especially for the over 40s or if your family has a history of colon cancer.
I often put lentils, kidney beans or chick peas in stews, pies and casseroles as well as including lots of fresh green veggies in the diet. Rice, potatoes and pasta are good and filling but don’t go overboard, otherwise you will see the results in a weight problem, which defeats the healthy lifestyle purpose. A dietician’s advice it to alternate use between peanut, olive oil and canola oil and ignore vegetable or sunflower oils.
