While it makes sense to purchase quality furnishings, instead of wasting money on “disposable” pieces, it is still a good idea to protect these furnishings. While children are small and adventurous, and when pets are young and just as energetic, furniture can quickly begin to feel used and abused. These tips will help:
Use a Duvet Cover
To protect a special quilt, a down comforter, or other bed coverings that shouldn’t be laundered too frequently, make a duvet cover. This is a simple, inexpensive way to cover and protect your special items during everyday use. The simplest most cost effective way to make a duvet is to purchase flat sheets the same size as your bed. For a queen bed, purchase two flat queen sheets. Sew Velcro, snaps, or lengths of ribbon to the edges of both sheets. Place the bed cover between the sheets and adjust the closures.
Use a Tablecloth
When not entertaining or serving a holiday meal, protect your kitchen or dining table with a tablecloth. You can use a separate pad and cloth or a padded tablecloth, to keep your table free from dings, scratches, and spills. Another idea is to create a slipcover for your tabletop. This can be made from light, smooth wood, which can be stained or painted. You can place felt or a pad on the tabletop, then place the fitted, wooden cover over the top. Alternatively, you can make a fitted, upholstered pad for your tabletop using complementary fabric.
Use Throw Rugs or Runners
While many people don’t care for the look of throw rugs or runners, they work great to protect your flooring, especially near doorways and in high traffic areas. Keep them in place to protect against everyday wear and tear, and simply remove them when having company or entertaining.
