I had heard of the word proxy before. However, until some recent research I had no clue what a proxy marriage was. I really cannot even say that I knew they existed. Therefore, in case some of you are like me, I have decided to share what I have learned about proxy marriages with you.
Definition
A proxy marriage takes place between two people just as a regular marriage would. However, instead of having both the bride and the groom, one person is absent from the ceremony. During a proxy wedding, one of the partner’s has a stand in. For some reason or another, one partner cannot attend the wedding. The person standing in has been given power of attorney to act on behalf of the absent partner.
History
Proxy marriages were once more common than today. They were more often used during the time of war when soldiers could not attend their won weddings.
Who allows them?
Proxy marriages are recognized and allowed in four of the fifty states. Those four states are California, Colorado, Texas, and Montana. California only allows a proxy marriage if one of the parties is in the armed forces and has been deployed due to war or a conflict. Colorado also has some limitations on how and who can obtain a proxy marriage.
Other Countries
Mexico easily allows proxy marriages. For anywhere from $500 to $800, a proxy marriage can take place. The marriage can be arranged in less than a day. Paraguay also allows proxy marriages.
Are they recognized everywhere?
Some states do not recognize a proxy marriage from another state. They treat the marriage as a common law marriage. Some states allow for military partners to annul a proxy marriage if no acts of husband and wife occurred after the marriage.
Proxy marriages are usually expensive and not always legal. Check the laws and with an attorney before going through with a proxy marriage.
