Psalm 119

One of my favorite passages of scripture in the Bible is Psalm 119. This Psalm, the longest of all in the collection of Psalms, speaks of God’s Word. The one hundred and nineteenth Psalm describes the beauty and excellence of the commandments, statutes, laws, precepts, and testimonies of God. Christians should have the same love and passion for the Word of God which is expressed in this Psalm.

Psalm 119 also describes the rewards of diligently following after God’s Word. This Psalm describes one who keeps God’s ways as “blessed” (Psalm 119:2). In verses 98-99 the Psalmist speaks of having wisdom exceeding his years because he has kept the commandments of God.

In this Psalm, the Psalmist also conveys his fervent desire to follow God’s laws. Christians should also have that same strong desire to follow the commandments of God for several reasons. As Christians we should want to obey God’s Word because we love Him. We should also want to obey the Bible for the simple fact that the Bible is God’s Word, and that He is the Ruler of the universe.

Today, in one of the classes I am attending part-time with my husband, the teacher spoke about signs or indications that one could be losing their faith in God, or in other words, falling away. One of the indications the teacher spoke about was a lack of study. Christians should be actively studying God’s Word, striving to follow its teachings. In 2nd Timothy 2:15 the Bible states: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

On a slightly different note, you might have noticed in the Families.com forums, my signature line includes Psalm 119:11: “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Here the Bible shows us that a way to fight sin in our lives is to have the Word of God stored in our hearts. By having God’s Word in our hearts, we not only know what is expected of us in our Christian walk, but also how to better overcome sin.
