One of the clear ways to save money is to use less. We all know that, right? It might surprise you to know that there are certain common things that people usually use too much of, or at least more than they need to use. That extra doesn’t add any benefit, but it does use up our resources sooner, forcing us to buy more and spend money.
We are so blessed in our lives. We have the ability to go out and get practically anything we need, from food to health and beauty supplies. What would our ancestors from other generations think of all of the products we use on a daily basis?
Sometimes I think that we get so used to having so much that we don’t think too often about conserving it. Advertising generally urges us to use more and more, so that doesn’t help.
Where is all of this going? Well, today, my young daughter wanted to wash and condition her hair in the bath tub for the first time. I watched her as she squirted out enough shampoo to wash an entire monkey. When it came to using the conditioner, however, she only used a tiny amount. How is this possible? It all had to do with packaging. The shampoo came in a bottle with a regular squeeze/pour type cap. It was easy for to glob it on. In comparison, the conditioner bottle had a pump-type dispenser. One pump and she was done.
So, by pouring shampoo (and shower gel) into pump containers, we might just be likely to use less of those products, perhaps making them last twice as long. Pump bottles can be found pretty inexpensively at dollar stores and bed and bath type stores. They may also make us more likely to buy those products in bulk, since refilling the pump bottles will eliminate a need to try to fit those super-sized shampoo bottles in the bathroom.
