Right this minute, I have a pumpkin pie cooling on my counter. And it smells wonderful. One of my sons loves pumpkin pie. It’s his absolute favorite dessert. I’ve been promising him all summer to make one as soon as we had a cool day. This summer I just didn’t want to have the oven on for the hour and fifteen minutes they take to bake. And today was our first cool day. I don’t think it got over 70 degrees today. And don’t think he needed reminding – it was the first thing out of his mouth when I told him he should look for a jacket to wear to school.
It’s just a little thing, making a pie. But it is doing a lot. It’s making all but one person in the family happy. One of the boys doesn’t like pumpkin pie. I try to make or buy all our favorites fairly often. Again, it’s a little thing. But why not have mangos as often as you can afford them if you love mangos. Or why eat vanilla ice cream when it’s really Cherry Garcia that you crave? Why not enjoy those little things?
The pie is also celebrating the change of season. I can easily see making a pumpkin pie on the first cool day becoming a tradition. The smells of that buttery crust and cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are making our recently closed up house smell like fall. The smell is a promise of cooler weather and the coming holidays. And right now the thought of the holidays brings a smile to my face. In another month it will bring feelings of panic, so I’m enjoying this relaxed smell of pumpkin pie wafting through the house. We are all (except one of us) looking forward to dessert. I wonder if it’s cool enough to cut.
