Pumpkin Pots

Okay, Okay, I know it is not yet September, but everywhere I go I see the fall season. The weather has gotten cooler all of a sudden, with temperatures in the low seventies and comfortable, instead of the high eighties and nineties with humidity. Halloween and fall decorations are already in the stores, and our local orchard is advertising pick-your-own apples. All of this has put me in the mood for a pumpkin-theme craft for the home.

While I’ve made this craft in past years, I recently saw a version of this idea in a free magazine put out by Lowe’s.

You can make some cute little pumpkin pots to hold your apples, Halloween candy, flowers (mums look wonderful in them) and more. Make an entire patch of them for a decorative statement or to give away to your friends and neighbors as festive gifts. You can even use them to hold snacks for party.

Making this craft might make a great get together for friends.

For this craft, we are basically going to decorate clay pots or planters with either a jack-o-lantern design or a trio of pumpkins with vines and leaves. You’ll need:

  • Clay planters (8-inch ones work well for this project)
  • Gold Spray paint
  • Black or orange and green paint (use exterior paint if you’ll be displaying the pots outside, otherwise acrylic paint is fine.)
  • Pencil
  • Tracing or printer paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Masking tape
  • Craft or utility knife

Directions:

  1. Spray the inside of the pot with gold spray paint and let the paint dry thoroughly.
  2. Use your paper and pencil to sketch out your jack-o-lantern face or pumpkins, or print a free design from the Internet.
  3. Using your knife, cut out the inside of the pattern or design.
  4. Tape the paper to the outside of the pot and use it as a guide to pencil in your design. Then remove the pattern.
  5. Using your brush, paint in the design. Allow the pot to dry throughly.

Fill the pots with whatever you wish!
