Retelling a story is a fantastic way to teach a preschooler sequencing and practice memory skills. One way to make this time more fun is to plan a puppet show. Children love puppet shows and this activity will allow them a chance to design a puppet and be the puppeteer.
Supplies:
Wooden spoons
Tacky glue
Google eyes
Yarn
Fabric (pieces of fabric, pieces from old clothing, or even felt)
Permanent markers
Instructions:
Decide what type of puppet you will make. Use the yarn as hair or adornments. The fabric will be for the clothing. Make this simply by just cutting a rectangle for a shirt or a triangle for a dress. The google eyes are, of course, for eyes and the permanent markers are for the mouth, nose or any details you want to apply. Use the Tacky glue to securely bond your items to the wooden spoon.
The rounded part of the spoon will serve as the face. Glue the eyes and hair in the appropriate place. Then use your permanent marker to make a mouth or details you desire.
The handle of the spoon will serve as the body. Cut a rectangle from your desired fabric. Adorn it as you wish using buttons, ribbons or other fabric. Apply a line of Tacky glue on the front and back of the spoon handle and then apply your fabric. You can apply fabric to the front and back or just the back to make it easier in which case to not apply glue to both sides of the handle. You can use ribbon to tighten the rectangle fabric and make a dress or to use as a belt. You may also want to cut a triangle for a dress. Glue the point toward the face and the wide end toward the bottom to give the appearance of a dress. Adorn as you desire.
