Most digital cameras sold today have a self timer built in as a standard feature. Learn how to use your self timer before you need to use it. Nothing is more embarrassing than your family anxiously waiting for you to figure out how to use the self timer. Owning a tripod is going to help you more effectively use the self timer. I have been caught without a tripod and placed the camera on a table to get the shot although I don’t recommend trying it unless it is your only option.
The self timer will allow you to be included in your family photos. If you are like me I am the one behind the camera so I use the self timer for self portraits also. A good time to use the self timer is for the Christmas photo of your family in front of the fireplace. And when my extended family gets together for a reunion the self timer is a great way to get included in the group photos. No matter what event you plan on using the self timer for you will want to practice ahead of time.
Each camera is different. My little Casio Exilim has three self timer settings. The first setting is a 2 second delay; no way can I run that fast to get in the photo. The second is a 10 second delay which is a reasonable setting for me. The third setting waits a 10 second delay then takes 3 consecutive photos. The three consecutive photos setting will save you the added effort running back and forth from the camera.
Stage yourself a quick photo session to try out the self timer. Attach your camera to the tripod and set up at an appropriate distance. Use the viewfinder to frame your photo, remember to leave space for you to join the photo. Press the button to activate the timer. My camera flashes a red light and has a sound that beeps faster as it gets closer to the photo being taken. Move quickly to get yourself in the photo. Chances are you won’t like your first results but with more practice you will get some great shots.
