Even if your pet has free reign of the home, it might be nice to create a special space for him or her. It’s not only nicer for the pet, it makes your home look nicer as well if all of your pet’s items are kept in one area.
Start with great pet bedding. There are various styles of beds available for different types of pets, or you can make your own. It’s as simple as making a large, cushy pillow. Make the pillow large enough for your pet to lie in the center with plenty of extra space around the edges. Use heavy fabric such as denim, and stuff the pillow generously.
Next, provide new food and water dishes. Even if you are conscientious about cleaning your pet’s dishes, they become embedded with germs and begin to show wear over time. Select pet dishes that coordinate with the bedding you have chosen. Purchase a vinyl placemat or a piece of vinyl that goes with the other items and place it beneath pet dishes to keep meal times more tidy.
Instead of having dog food, cat food, or a bag of kitty litter sitting around, choose storage containers to hold these items. You might choose one large container to hold these as well as leashes, collars, brushes, and other things, or you can choose separate containers and pour food or litter directly into them.
Also, look into self-feeding containers. You can find sizes that hold from 1-5 pounds of food and there are also units for water. This way, if you are not home when your pet gets hungry or needs more water, it will always be available.
If your pet is playful and has a collection of pet toys, select a plastic basket that’s easy to clean and use it to store pet toys. These toys should also be cleaned and disinfected from time to time, as should the basket.
Where you decide to create the pet area is a personal decision, but these ideas should help you put together a tidy, comfortable space for your pet in no time.
