While the green way of living may seem more natural, many of us need to begin with baby steps. After all, we’ve been use to driving our gas guzzling SUVs everywhere, leaving lights on in the house, and running water like it was never ending. I believe some people are hesitant to go green because they think it will be difficult, but here are some easy ways to start going green:
Use rechargeable batteries – the only thing is you will need to remember to charge them from time to time!
Purchase energy-efficient florescent bulbs – not only are you saving house energy, you are saving your own energy as these bulbs can last up to 12 times longer than traditional bulbs!
Use cloth napkins instead of paper – all the fancy restaurants do, why shouldn’t you?
Turn the water off when you brush!
Only flush for number twos – number ones can sit for a while.
Adjust the thermostat – during both the summer and winter!
Turn off electronics when not in use – how often does your DVD player stay on when you are not using it? That is eating up energy!
Take more showers and fewer baths – it saves on water.
Check books out from the local library instead of purchasing new ones.
Plant a garden.
Recycle, recycle, recycle!
Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Use a refillable water bottle rather than packaged water.
Purchase a hand-powered flashlight and radio for emergencies.
Bake your own bread.
Let things air dry when not in a hurry. This includes your hair, your clothes, and your dishes.
Go meatless one day a week – it is believed that 18% of the global greenhouse gas emissions are due to meat consumption (raising livestock, processing and packaging the meat, and shipping the meat to stores).
Even if you only do a few of these things, chances are you will not only be helping the environment, but also helping your wallet!
