Quick Trick for Extra Seating

Well, I won’t bore those of you who aren’t into football with the kick off of a new NFL season, especially since my team the Chicago Bears, lost their first game. However, as autumn emerges, there are going to be other get-togethers besides football games, and you may need some extra seating for last minute entertaining.

A great way to add some extra seating without a lot of effort or expense is to utilize your existing patio chairs. No, I’m not suggesting that we just throw them into our living rooms or family rooms “as is,” but there are some quick tricks to use that will make them look and feel more like “real” furniture. These ideas are easy to undo as well, so when you need outdoor chairs again, there’s no problem.

First, you want to make sure the chairs are clean. Cover each one with a sheet or large piece of fabric (you can do separate pieces, covering one section of the chair at a time for a more tailored look, if desired). Smooth the sheet and pin it in place, snugly. Carefully pull the fabric off, turn it so the pins are on the inside, and place it back on the chair. quick trick extra seating slipcoverYou can make matching cushions from foam, or simply cover outdoor cushions with pillowcases from the sheet set. Fold over the excess and pin in to the bottom. Set the cushion on top of the new slipcover.

Add accent pillows, and you’re all set. When you want to use the chairs outdoors, slip off the chair and cushion slipcovers and take them back outside.

If you don’t intend to use the chairs outdoors again until next season, you can make the coverings a bit more substantial when using the chairs indoors. Tailor the slip covers and sew them. Add foam to the back of each chair and to the armrests before applying the slipcovers (duct tape can be used to hold the foam in place).
