Raising Our Children in the World

One of the most difficult things that we must do as parents is to allow our kids to go out into the world. It is important that we prepare them for this. They need to learn the gospel and the values that it teaches. They need to have the courage to stand up for the gospel. They also need to gain a testimony of the gospel to carry them through the difficult times in their lives.

We are truly in a time where the world is calling evil good and good evil. Many people do not think twice about things that would not have been tolerated twenty or thirty years ago. It seems that every year there is a new worry to face. As I say these things I know that there are many good people out there who are simply doing the best they can in the situations that they are in. Still it can be scary to send your child out into the world.

It is important to begin to teach your children the gospel at a young age. You can begin having family scripture study, family prayer and family home evening as soon as you are married or when your first child is born. These activities help to make discussing gospel questions easier in your family. It also creates an atmosphere of love and acceptance.

If you make your home a comfortable and inviting place your children will want to bring their friends over. This allows you to know them and learn what they are doing and interested in. As you have a home that welcomes in the spirit others will be drawn to it.

It is also important to be an example for your children. They will learn proper behavior when you model it for them. You can do more good by living the gospel quietly and completely, than by preaching it loudly every night. If your children know that you believe because you live it, and then they will learn of its truth as well.
