When will they ever learn? Perhaps, that is a bit trite. But, after hearing that rapper Eminem is continuing with divorce proceedings with his wife, Kimberley Mathers, yet again, I feel the need to throw my opinion into the mix.
For all of you who need a refresher course in “Eminem’s Marriages 101,” here it is: The 33-year-old Grammy-winning rapper, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, originally married his childhood sweetheart Kimberley back in 1999. That marriage lasted two years. What resulted was a knock-down-drag-out fight in court. It was by all accounts a nasty, bitter battle, which involved their young daughter, Hailie Jade Scott. I remember reading about the awful, vicious slurs each party spewed about each other in the press (Eminem recorded a controversial song that depicted his ex-wife in—and I’m being tactful here—an extremely unflattering light). The entire episode was hateful and ugly–as many divorces tend to be.
Fast forward five years and the unthinkable takes place—by some twist of fate the couple got remarried this past January, a month after announcing they were getting back together. Fast forward two months and reality sets in—Eminem files for divorce again. So just to recap: the couple weds for the first time in 1999; stays together for about two years; gets entrenched in one of the celebrity world’s nastiest divorces; rekindles their romance five years later; remarries; then splits again 10 weeks later. Insanity. Do you know why I employee such a harsh term? Because at the center of all of this craziness is an innocent 10-year-old child. Never mind what the public perceives of the Mathers’ decisions, what about this poor kid who has been sentenced to ride on an emotional roller coaster because of her parents lack of judgment.
According to news reports, the Mathers’ divorce case has been sent to a mediator and lawyers for both parties told reporters they hoped the case would settle amicably. Kimberely Mathers is reportedly seeking financial support, attorney fees and joint custody of Hailie Jade Scott. Meanwhile, Eminem has won nine Grammy Awards, including best rap album for “The Slim Shady LP,””The Marshall Mathers LP” and “The Eminem Show” says he will no comment about the case.
