My daughter has got it figured out. No, she can’t read perfectly just yet, but she is DYING to be able to read. It all started about a month ago when she came home from preschool and told me a boy in her class could already read. I responded saying that she will learn too, very soon. She just has to keep practicing her letters.
Then, it was like one day it just clicked! She just figured out that letters made sounds, and put those sounds together, and voila! You have words. So, now she is unstoppable. She wants to read anything and everything. No matter where we are, she is asking, Mommy, “what does that say?” or, “Mommy, that says, ______”. It’s awesome to see it all coming together.
The other day we were driving in the car, and she said to me and my husband, “That car in front of us says Jeep!” She was right. I asked her, “How did you know that?” She said, “Because when you have two e’s next to each other, it makes the ee sound!” We were shocked.
One thing that has been perfect for her when learning to read is for me to read her a book, but stop at all the words that I know she will be able to sound out herself. She cannot get enough. Even after I am getting tired of this method, she just wants to keep reading! We also have been using our leftover candy hearts from Valentine’s Day to help her read small words. They are perfect for her, and she has so much fun figuring it out.
I have been so excited for my daughter to read, because from a very young age she has loved books. Even as a baby she wanted to sit for long stretches of time and just look at books. She would study the pages, and be enthralled even at 5 months old.
It is so wonderful to watch your child learn how to read. And, it is even more amazing when they get to that one day where it all just clicks. Then, there is no turning back!
