Ready or not, the new school year is here.
Whether you choose to celebrate by doing a happy dance at the bus stop or by ordering a double caramel macchiato on the way home from drop-off, don’t forget that the first week of school can take some getting used to, especially for young kids. To help ease the transition from freewheeling summer to pencils, books and teachers’ strict looks, consider the following:
Free Movie Friday: In honor of surviving the first week of the new academic year, treat your kids to a fun-filled movie night. Turn your basement or family room into a mock theater complete with cinema-inspired treats, such as popcorn, nachos, candy and soda. Then, let your kids pick one flick each to show during a double or triple feature.
Apple Note Cards: One way to encourage your kids’ enthusiasm for the new school year is to make learning fun. By putting your own spin on school supplies you give your child the chance to create one-of-a-kind materials that will be the talk of the classroom. Apple note cards are not only fun and easy to make, but they also come in handy when kids have to jot down important facts in class. To make them all you need is: An apple sliced down the center vertically, a pin, some paper towels, paint (red, green, white and brown), a paint brush, and a set of plain note cards. Once you cut the apple down the middle, remove the seeds and blot the surface of the fruit with a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture. Next, apply a coat of white paint over the surface of the apple, and then add a thin line of red or green paint around the edge. (If the stem is still attached to your apple, brush brown paint on it.) Firmly press the apple to the front of the note card. Then, stab one of the apple seeds with the pin, dip it in brown paint, and stamp it on the card. Finally, allow the paint to dry before collecting the cards and using the non-painted side to write notes.
