Really Clean Sheets

How often do you wash your bed sheets? A few years ago Oprah interviewed a “germ expert” who mentioned that bed linen should be washed in extremely hot water every 3 days. A gasp went up from the audience and it was later revealed that the majority of Oprah’s fans routinely sanitized their sheets bi-monthly.

So, in case you answered “twice a month—at best” you needn’t feel bad… though you may feel itchy. According to scientists, during the night your body sheds cells, which mites live off of. What’s more, doctors say breathing those microbes in as you sleep can cause or worsen health problems. And, let’s face it; sharing a mattress with bed bugs is just gross.

So how can you rest easier knowing that bed bugs are at bay? You could follow the advice of Oprah’s expert or you could invest in some special sheets. You’re familiar with anti-bacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, heck, some of you may even wear “germ-free” clothes, so the idea of bacteria-free sheets should not come as a surprise.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before some company started to make anti-microbial bedding… and now the product is flying off store shelves. The secret to the new sheets is their copper fibers (others include silver and bamboo). Manufacturers say those ingredients fight bacteria, fungi, and mold.

Not convinced the new sheets will help you win the war against bed bugs? You should be. A new study out says there is scientific proof that the sheets reduced the counts of microbes in experiments.

I wasn’t surprised to see that the anti-bug sheets cost more than regular cotton ones, but at least you don’t have to spend more money cleaning them. The tags say you can wash them the same way you would normal sheets. However, the manufacturer (like Oprah’s expert) recommends laundering the sheets at least once a week.
