Reason #197 to Work from Home

We recently got word that my husband’s long-time employer, a sign company, was closing their doors come August 1st – the owner was retiring and wasn’t selling the business but instead just shutting it down. As we debated what to do, we finally decided that moving was our only option. We live in a small town, and there isn’t exactly a plethora of graphic artist jobs in the offing. We will be moving to a larger town about two hours away, where there is a plethora of sign companies who hopefully will want to hire my husband. Hopefully. 😉

But in the midst of all of the worry and anxiety about what we were going to do (should we move? Should we stay? Should we look into a different field of work?) the one thing we didn’t have to worry about were my jobs and my work. We could pack up and move (which we are right in the middle of – you should see my living room. Boxes to the ceiling) without worrying about losing my income too. I don’t have to quit my job, and I don’t have to look for a new one in the new city. We are already searching for one job, for my husband – it is nice that we don’t have to worry about me too.

I have written other blogs about how nice it is to work from home (here and here too) and the benefits that come from working from home, but I think this has helped drive it home more than anything else that has happened. Sure, it’s nice to work in my PJs, and sure, it’s nice to have flexibility in what I do, but for me, the true bottom line has become the ability to do it wherever I have an Internet connection. When we move into our new home, I’ll probably call the Internet company to come hook us up before I even bother calling the power company. I have a battery on my laptop – I can go without power. But go without the Internet? Never! After all, I am obsessed with the Internet and my computer. I’m still looking for a 12-step program to help with that obsession… 😉
