I was upset back in elementary school when my son was smacked daily because his first name was Jackson as was the name of the school. However, imagining being a Jewish student on Hit a Jew day is beyond my comprehension.
According to the Associated Press, “At least four students from a suburban St. Louis middle school face punishment for allegedly hitting Jewish classmates during what they called “Hit a Jew Day.” The incident happened last week at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield… The concern is a lot of kids knew about it and they didn’t take action or say anything”.
It all started innocently enough. There as an unofficial spirit week where kids had Hug a Friend day, then High Five Day, then there was Hit a Tall Person day, before the infamous Hit a Jew Day. Jewish students were not only hit but smacked in the face and some were also taunted.
It’s no wonder many schools ban touching. The school’s response is to suspend five students who did the hitting, and to move a program to promote diversity.
But this is beyond the point. I am glad I homeschool because if this is what they call socialization, I want no part of it for my kids. I am happy that my kids can look at a situation and walk away from it especially when it is as inane as the actions at this school.
Back when I was in middle school we had similar issues, but we didn’t have special days for them. The polish kid was regularly taunted with polish jokes. Girls would have their skirts flipped up in back to expose their panties, and in high school there were male teachers in high school who had perfected the pinch and wink. While many of these old behaviors are now under control, it seems they just keep cropping up in different forms.
