Reasons I am Glad We Homeschool: School Bus Incidents

For the last couple of days an instance of school bus violence has dominated education news and blogs. Basically, a white student got on the school bus and no one would allow him to sit down next to them. (There where both white and black kids on the bus refusing him.) The driver yelled for the kids to sit down so he moved the book bag of a black kid and sat down. Other students began to instigate and the black boy who he sat next to attacked him. A few minutes later it appeared that the first attacker had surrendered the seat to the victim and the boy was sitting alone. Another black student got up and attacked him.

Each time other kids on the bus where cheering and yelling. A few of the girls seemed horrified. The attackers were suspended and may be expelled. A few of the instigators will be reprimanded. Unfortunately the incident was just beginning.

Immediately the local police and news outlets labeled this crime as racially motivated. News spread quickly across the country as people began to grumble about race issues in schools and called these kids all kind of racist names. As the investigation continued, police began to recant their initial assertion of race and decided it was merely bullying by a couple of kids.

Perhaps they watched the video?

This only added fuel to the fire. Now people are screaming that only white kids get pegged for race related crimes and blacks are protected. This simple isolated incident has spread from Illinois to the entire country and has pitted the races against each other.

This makes me glad I homeschool because my kids will never be in the middle of such an ugly school bus incident and furthermore no one will ever be able to look at them and decide that because they are black they are racist thugs. Call it antisocial if you wish, but sometimes it is good to set our kids apart from others and allow them to stand out as good, upstanding young men and women. Some “real life” incidents are best avoided.

In other news, two weeks ago a local man got on a school bus where he stripped off his clothes, threw the driver off the bus, and took it over. Most of the kids jumped off the bus risking injury to get away from what must have been a shocking and traumatizing event. One student fought the naked man and retrieved control of the bus.

I am glad my kids don’t have to deal with that kind of craziness either.
