Reasons I am glad we homeschool: Swine Flu

Let me begin by stating that I do not believe for a second that by homeschooling my kids that they will not be exposed to swine flu or a similar kind of yuck. Just this year, we have experienced more yuck episodes than in the last few years. Our drama club was a hot bed of germs. We had stomach viruses. We had the flu. We had a second round of stomach viruses, and a little bit of strep come our way. Let me tell you, if you were in our particular group of homeschoolers, or remotely related to us, you got the yuck too.

So why would I write that swine flu is a reason to be glad we homeschool? Simple. Swine flu is spreading through schools and the only way to stop the spread is to shut down schools. For schoolchildren in those affected areas, it means canceled classes, canceled tests, and canceled learning. For the most part, if school is not in session there is no learning going on.

Meanwhile for homeschoolers, should we have to take a break in getting together with other homeschoolers, the only thing that would stop is the ever “important” socialization. Math will not stop. Reading will not stop. Writing will not stop. “School will go on as usual.”

While I feel horrible for anyone that get’s the swine flu or is in danger of contracting it, I feel even worse for kids who will have to take a break from education and then possibly have to lose part of their summer to make it up. For homeschoolers, it is business as usual, even if we actually get sick, we still keep learning as much as possible. This is why Swine flu is a reason I am glad we homeschool.
