I love doing the Scripture Study blogs. I sit down and open up the scriptures online, and I read the words that will comprise the study for that day. As I think about them, I write down the thoughts and feelings that come into my mind, which eventually become the blog. However, my thoughts and feelings are not the be-all, end-all.
Each and every one of us was sent to earth with a spark of divinity in us that entitles us to personal revelation. As we contemplate the things of eternity, we will catch glimpse of understanding and greater things will be revealed to us. One of the best ways to start this process is to sit down with a journal and record your gospel questions. Then write down the insights you receive. This shows the Spirit that you want to be taught, and the floodgates will be opened.
As you read the scriptures, do the same thing. Write down any thoughts that come to you, along with the reference for the scripture that prompted that thought. Nola blogged about this in “Scripture Journals.” I add my voice to hers that this is a powerful tool for receiving inspiration and understanding.
You can also open those lines of spiritual communication by pondering on the scriptures throughout the day. Sometimes if I read a verse that hits me with a stronger than usual impact, I’ll read it through a few times, and then close the book. I’ll ponder on it as I move through my daily routine, and find that my brain chews it over even when I’m not consciously thinking about it. We are told to search, ponder, and pray, not, read fast and forget.
As you read the Scripture Study blogs here on Families.com, I encourage you to not only read my notes, but to think what you would add to them. Turn to the scriptures and mark the passages. Follow the cross-references. Become active in your scripture study. The more familiar you are with them, the more tools and weapons you will have in your fight against temptation.
