Do you have any leftover Halloween candy? Since my daughter’s unfortunate post-Halloween illness she hasn’t touched a single sweet treat. (Who would have imagined anything good could have resulted from 4 days of the stomach flu?) Needless to say, we are drowning in chocolate, Starburst, lollipops, Nerds, and Smarties.
Last night as I was making my Thanksgiving shopping list I vowed that I would get rid of the candy someway or another. (Mind you I already gave away two big bags filled with Halloween leftovers.) I have to clear out the candy in order to make room for the Turkey Day ingredients.
Last year I provided tips on how to make the most of your leftover Halloween candies. At the time I figured I’d never need to expand on those ideas because there would be no way my daughter’s treats would last beyond the first week of November. Boy, was I wrong. So, for all of you home cooks who share my predicament I offer two additional recipes for sweet concoctions that star your favorite Halloween chocolate goodies.
BUTTERFINGER BARS
Ingredients:
4 cups rolled oats
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
1 cup Hershey Kisses
3/4 cup peanut butter
18 fun-size Butterfinger bars, cut in half
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13-by-9-inch baking pan.
In a medium-size bowl, combine oats and sugars. Stir in butter and mix well.
Spread mixture evenly in bottom of prepared pan. Bake 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Melt Hershey Kisses with peanut butter, stirring occasionally until smooth; spread over baked crust. Cool; cut into bars. Garnish with cut-up Butterfinger bars. Makes 36 bars.
QUIK BROWNIES

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 eggs
2 cups flour
1-1/2 cups Nestle’s Quik
1-1/2 cups plain M&Ms
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except M&Ms in order listed. Spread evenly in a 9-by-13-inch pan; sprinkle M&Ms evenly over top. Bake 40 minutes; cool and cut into bars. Makes 24 bars.
