Being a single parent comes with unique challenges. I know when I went through my divorce I had far more questions than I did answers. Sure, I would talk to friends and family but I discovered some great books. What I liked about these books was that in addition to helping me through a difficult divorce, they also helped me learn who I was as a single parent. The result was growing stronger and wiser, while being a better parent.
For me, I look for books that are what I call “reader friendly”. There is nothing worse than picking up something to read and find your mind drifting off somewhere else. As a writer, I’m probably worse than most people. Therefore, I spent hours and hours at my local Barnes and Noble, looking for books that would be fun and easy to read but also books that would help me be the best single parent possible. The books listed below are ones I would highly recommend.
-Single Parent Families: Diversity, Myths, and Realities – Written by Doris J. Julian, Marvin B. Sussman, and Marsha L. Heims
-The Single Mom’s Workplace Survival Guide – Written by Brenda Armstrong
-Helping your Kids Cope with Divorce the Sandcastles Way – Written by M. Gary Neuman and Patricia Romanowski
-Don’t Divorce your Children: Protecting their Rights and your Happiness – Written by Jennifer Lewis and William Sammons
-Single Parents – Dating, Single Parents – Engagement, Single Parents – Merging – Written by Dr. Donald Partridge
-Single Mothers by Choice: A Guidebook for Single Women who are considering or have Chosen Motherhood – Written by Jane Mattes, CSW
Sometimes, reading different books on single parenting from different perspectives can provide you with just the answer you have been seeking. Remember, having questions, fears, and challenges is something every single mother goes through so you are not in this alone. Many times, just having a viable resource makes all the difference in the world, making your job as a single parent far more enjoyable, for you and for the children.
