Given the opportunity to review Red Chair Press Funny Bone Reader book series which focuses on character development, I can honestly recommend these readers for your child. The Funny Bone Reader series includes 12 books and a lesson plan and activity book for the parent. These books are designed to enhance reading along with reinforcing character development. The books are delightful, colorful, and well written as reader books for children with some reading experience. The character topics include:
Fairness
Trustworthiness
Respect
Responsibility
Caring
Citizenship
If you have a child who is just learning how to read you will have to read these books to him. You can point out vowel sounds and so forth. Use the lesson plan and activity book to help you come up with strategies to best interest your child. If you are looking for books for your child read with little help or on his own, then this fits first-third graders the best. The lesson plan and activity book will guide you into reinforcing the character development taught in the books to your children.
The 12 books are divided into two books per character trait. They are sold in six book series so you can teach all character traits without purchasing all 12 books. To implement this in your homeschool you may want to teach using the character trait as a theme and read the two books that week on fairness or caring. This way you will have a six week study using two books per week. You can use one book weekly for a 12 week study also with a focus on character development with a minor focus on vowel sounds, phonics and word families. Feel free to flip it and study primarily by phonics with character development as a secondary lesson. However, I feel with this set of books the focus should be on the character development. The books are not divided by phonic awareness, vowels, or word families.
